South Africa's TFG deploys RFID to drive stock accuracy

Half-way through an ambitious 24-month RFID roll-out, South African based retail group TFG is reporting cost savings and significant cuts in stock counting time.

The group operates 28 fashion retail brands in over 4000 stores across 32 countries, with chains including Fabiani, The Fix, Foschini, G-star Raw, Sportscene, Relay Jeans, Phase Eight and Whistles.

It has put RFID at the centre of a seven-year 'digital transformation programme,' with improved inventory accuracy seen as key to its long term omni-channel strategy.

Retailer rolls out RFID across 1000 stores...

RFID Journal News Jul 26, 2019 - South African fashion retailer The Foschini Group (TFG) has launched a UHFRFID solution across 500 stores throughout a four-month period for its Markham brands, with plans to apply RFID to its products company-wide. TFG's goal is to bring its inventory accuracy to between 95 and 98 percent, thereby preventing out-of-stock events in stores, while enabling "buy online pick-up in store" (BOPIS) sales in the near future. The program was launched in February 2019, and the company expects to have the technology live at 1,000 stores by the end of this year.

Martin Kurc, TFG's senior operations business process manager, and Michelle McCann, the company's RFID project manager, presented their RFID technology strategy and experiences at RFID Journal LIVE! Retail at RetailX, held in Chicago in June 2019. The solution is provided by RIoT Insight. With the system in place, Kurc says, the company can count inventory at a 51,000-unit store within only a few hours, typically by a single employee, while the same process with barcode inventory-based counters took several days with a store's full team pitching in. For that we needed to have stock accuracy in our stores, as well as our distribution centers.”

 He continues that in order to achieve this “…the group has adopted a digital transformation program, and it’s been driven from the board down to all of our brands, locally and abroad. One of the key drivers within this program is RFID, which was mandated by the board as being critical to meet the objectives of our digital transformation to support our omnichannel strategy. And we wanted a quick roll out of RFID of 24 months for all our brands.”

RIoT Insight names Eric Olafson as Chairman of the Board of Directors

Eric was the CEO of Tomax Corporation, a pioneer in cloud retailing. Founded in 1981, Tomax evolved as an early adopter of centralized, real-time architecture in the late 1990s with the emergence of the internet, enabling retailers to take the cost and complexity out of their retail operations, host it in what is now known as the cloud, and focus on what’s matters most, their retail operations.
